He shared His light with me!

By Indira Gosh

I remember my dad once having said “When Jesus was born, He brought light into the world”. As a three year old kid I was curious to know the color of that light. When he said that the color was white, I went on to ask him the color of the light that I brought into the world. Though he unconvincingly said yellow, not wanting to disappoint me, the thought that I didn’t bring forth any light disturbed me for a long time since then. Having grown up in a Hindu family, I had to wait till my college days to get an answer to that question. When Jesus touched me, He shared HIS light with me and from then on, I too became the light of the world with HIM.

Years had passed by without realizing that I was deep in sin. For my undergraduate degree, I left my hometown of Jharkhand to join Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. It suddenly dawned on me that I was being pulled out of my comfort zone into a far-away land, left all alone to adapt to a new environment. Sharing my hostel room with four other people, with whom I thought there was little compatibility, was difficult. With no family or friends around to share my woes with, I would cry out to my mom on the phone. However, her counseling over the phone seemed to be of no help. Furthermore, even though I was good at studies (I took pride in being successful), I felt empty inside. I even had an opportunity to compete in a college festival–for which I became famous–but fame did not satisfy my inner quests for something ultimate, which I myself didn’t know of at that time.

Fast forward to my second year in college and you find me with a new roommate–the previous roommates had left me due to some misunderstanding. This new roommate, Ella, was warned by our warden that I was a bad person to be with. However, she was a believer in Christ and little did I know that it was the starting of an  everlasting friendship, both with the LORD and with her.

She used to get up early in the morning and sing beautiful worship songs, accompanied by the guitar. I liked listening to them. Now, I used to read a lot of books on self confidence and one day I gave her one such book. I was puzzled to see her just flip through it and instead stick to the Bible. She would read her Bible daily. I wondered why she was so committed to reading the Bible. She told me that the Bible contained details on every aspect of her life, and that it was her manual on how to conduct daily life, with its focus on Christ. To be frank, I was not convinced that such a small book could have so much material for one to continue reading day after day after day!

Then one day Ella gave me a Bible. I was glad because I thought that the Bible was the place to start, if one wanted to learn archaic English, but she had given me the NIV version. Nevertheless, I started reading the Bible as I thought it would help me improve my English. Around the same time I asked Ella to take me to church. (I had always liked going to church even though I didn’t believe in Jesus.) From that time on, I guess I started attending church regularly even though I still had not accepted Christ as my Savior.

Then God proved Himself real to me through the following miracles:

(1) One sunny day I asked Ella if Jesus could cause it to rain. It usually does not rain in Vellore. She asked me to pray to Jesus and I did (This was one of my first prayers ever). It read: “GOD if You are real then please bring rain…but it should be that the showers fall right over the place I would be at.” Lo and behold! It rained right over me.

2) Ella and I came back late to the hostel that evening after dinner. Normally, if you are late the guards report you to the top authorities for coming in late. I was very scared, but as we passed through the security gates, the officials did not say anything – it was as if we were invisible! I couldn’t believe it and I asked Ella how this was possible. She said that she was praying to Jesus all the while, as she sensed the overwhelming fear I was experiencing.

3) This time, I had an appointment to meet with a person whose contact number I did not have. So I asked Jesus “If you are real then help me meet this boy”. Now you must realize that our college is really big. Much to my amazement, I met the person concerned in the market place!

4) Final exams were just around the corner and I was really ill. My conversation with God went this way : “Please help me during the exam. But how will I know if you will help me? Please let it rain so that I realize that I am writing this exam with Your help”. When the exam started, the windows started banging as a cyclonic wind brought heavy rain with it. With my desk having got drenched and answer sheets blown away, the examiner was forced to shift me to a different place. I completed my exams well ahead of time and got remarkable grades as well!

Through all these experiences God convinced me that He was real.  I boldly started proclaiming about Jesus to everyone around me that some even thought I had gone mad!

Jesus touched me when no one liked me. He took away my loneliness as well as my sins. He took away my short temper and I do not enter into strife anymore. He gave me a new circle of good friends with whom I can talk more about Him. He has even changed my voice that I can now sing (I couldn’t sing earlier). Though things around me did not change much, I have changed. Jesus helped me forgive my enemies. He filled my heart with love, joy and peace. And He still holds my hand and helps me walk. Jesus, I love you!

Thank you. What a blessing to read your testimony. I love that He used the rain to show Himself to you, not once but twice. I imagine that you must be reminded of Him in many ways but especially in the rain? May HIS love continually “pour” out on you!
