Our Umpire

By Sidharth Mohandas

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts… [Colossians 3:15]

I had been meditating on this verse for a while. As I was studying the Greek meanings of the words used here I came to realize that the Greek word used for “rule” in the above verse, that is brabeuo, carries the meaning “to be an umpire”. The word “umpire” being a sports name, made me look into how the umpire works in sports. An umpire according to Wikipedia is a person who has authority to make decisions about play in many sports. As I was meditating on this, I came to realize peace is supposed to be our umpire who makes decisions in our daily life as well. In other words, peace is the decision maker. If you are in a dilemma, let God’s peace be your umpire. Sometimes you may face with decisions where taking a job, signing a contract or going for a journey may seem good in your eyes, but then the peace of God would be lacking. In such cases, don’t do what you plan to do, till God approves it with His peace.

Today, I encourage you, dear readers, that you will heed to Christ’s peace and make the right decisions in life.

Very timely advice again, Sid! I have this rather persistent voice to apply for a certain job the past few days.

No doubt I’ll search my heart for the peace that is to be there before I proceed.

    God bless, and Shalom!
