The Better Sacrifice

March6

By Sidharth Mohandas

In this article I will be taking you to the Book of beginnings, Genesis. I will particularly be concentrating on the offerings of Cain and Abel and then I will unfold the prophetic mystery that these offerings symbolize.

We all know of the famous bite of all-time that sold out the entire human race to sin and the devil….the bite of death. That bite obviously had a lot of consequences other than spiritual death… we see that curses fell in various areas of man’s life. Before I take you into the sacrifices of Cain and Abel, I want you to notice one such curse that came about by man’s disobedience. It’s found in Genesis 3: 17, God says “Cursed is the ground because of you…” I want you to keep this in mind as I go further down.

In spite of the fact that man rejected God and chose Satan, God in His love prepared a way for man to approach Him. Sin’s wages being death, God Himself sacrificed a lamb and clothed them. “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them” [Genesis 3:21] God in fact was showing them how they could be accepted by Him.

When we come to the next generation of human beings, Cain and Abel, we are told that “Abel kept the flocks, and Cain worked the ground” [Genesis 4:2b]. In course of time, both of them brought offerings to the Lord. Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord, while Abel brought a lamb. We are also told that the Lord accepted Abel’s offering while rejected Cain’s offering. Here I want to unravel a prophetic truth that is very much applicable in our day: Cain came with the offering from the ground that God had cursed, while Abel came the way God had shown and that is, through the lamb. In our day, we have both these offering’s being presented- there are those who come with their good works from the ground that God has cursed and there are those who come through the Lamb. Who is the Lamb that has been sacrificed? I say with John the Baptist, “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world!” [John 1:29] The prophetic Lamb of God is Jesus, the Messiah. Abel’s sacrifice was a type and shadow of Jesus, and today anyone who comes with his good deeds to God will be rejected, while those who come through Jesus will be accepted. Many faces at the end of the age will be downcast like Cain’s when they realize that all their offerings were in vain because they didn’t come to God the way God is showing them- through His only begotten, Jesus Christ.
