Most people think worship has to do with singing songs, playing instruments, lifting up hands or kneeling down. When they tell some one “I’m going to worship the Lord”, they mean “I’m going to sing some songs to Him”. However, from Scripture we come to the realization that singing songs has nothing to do with worship. Worship is obedience to God, worship is sacrificing to God, and worship is giving to God.

If your hands are empty when you come to worship, you haven’t come before Him to worship. The first time the word “worship” was used in the Bible is found in Genesis 22:5

And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come again to you.

We all know the scenario… God asks Abraham to sacrifice his only son and Abraham in obedience starts off to sacrifice his son on Mount Moriah. The first aspect of worship: Abraham obeyed God fully and immediately. Secondly, he was willing to sacrifice something very close to his heart.

When you go to worship the Lord, are you giving Him anything? I’m not just talking about financial giving…t hat’s the least form of giving. Probably, you are having problems with rebellious children; will you truly give them to the Lord? I have heard so many parents give their children to the Lord, but when they don’t see an immediate manifestation of God’s work in them, they snatch their kids from Him and start dealing with them by themselves. Many years back, my mother and I had gone for a conference where the man of God after preaching started prophesying. Those were the days my mom was weighed down by my sister’s rebelliousness. As this man of God passed by my mom, she reached out in faith and touched his hand and very unusually and very different from the message he was delivering, he said, “GIVE your daughter to me, she is MINE, says the Lord”.

May be it’s not children you are having trouble with, probably it’s your spouse or an insurmountable task that’s worrying you at work, or may be it’s the unknown future that’s bothering you… “What will I do now?”, “Where will I get my finances from?”, “How can I get through that exam?”… If you’re hearing what I hear, God is telling you, “GIVE”. Give your thoughts to Him, give your finances to Him as He has instructed you, give your time to Him…. and do you know what He promises? He says He’d GIVE BACK!

God Himself showed us how this principle works. When He lost about one-third of the angels, and the entire human race… Do you know what He did? He GAVE His only Son. And He has been reaping the harvest of that giving for more than 2000 years!

But before I end, I want to tell you about the HIGHEST form of worship… it is giving oneself to the Lord.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your act of spiritual worship. [Romans 12: 1]
